Water Leakage Problem in Split AC

A split AC consists of two major parts, the condensing unit and the air handling unit.

If your split AC is leaking it could be due to a blocked or disconnected drainage pipe, frozen evaporator coils, a cracked drip pan, or the refrigerant could be leaking. For some of these, they can be fixed by yourself. While the others require a professional’s touch.

Here, we’ll show you how to spot the problem, identify it properly, and help you fix them wherever possible.

1. Incorrect installation

While not common its possible that the device was not properly aligned, balanced, or fitted and that is what is causing the problem

Contact the installer service and explain the problem and they’ll send over a representative to look over, evaluate the problem and try to resolve the issue before any further problems.

2. Malfunction

Even with everything working as it should parts could be defective or improperly manufactured and this would be easily fixable with a call to the seller.

If outside the warranty/guarantee period

3. Blocked or disconnected drainage pipe

To fix this, unplug the unit and remove the front panel,

Find the drainage pipe in the unit and drain it in a bucket before proceeding further,

Disconnect the drain pipe and attach a vacuum to it and clean it,

Reattach everything, and connect the front panel

Turn it on and test run it.

4. Frozen evaporator coils

If you suspect that your evaporator coils are freezing up, check for ice around the outdoor refrigerant line, look for condensation, moisture, or overflow.

If you find any of these, please call a professional as this process requires training to fix properly.

5. Cracked drip pan

Usually located just under the evaporator coils, it wears down after ample use but is usually replaceable with the use of industrial tools and, still, professional help is advised.

To fix this, unplug the unit and remove the front panel to show the drip pan,

Remove water from around the area,

Mark the cracked areas for reference,

Use a water-resistant sealant to fix the cracks,

Check the seal quality, then reassemble the unit.

6. leaking refrigerant

While it’s easier to add refrigerant to a system, it will be difficult to repair it.

This is another tricky one as we would need professional tools to do the repairs, tools like refrigerant gas level measure (or halogen gas leak detector) to diagnose if the system is faulty, soldering equipment, metal cutting apparatus, etc.

If the leak is in or around a valve or port, it requires replacement or soldering,

If the leak is in the heat pump copper tubing a repair would be to re-solder or cut and replace the damaged part with a working one.

If the leak is in the condensing coil or the evaporator coil, personal repair is next to impossible and professional aid is required.

Simple periodic cleaning and proper care with servicing can make the device last considerably longer.

7. Low-Chance Events

Minor and/or rare events like deregulated apparatus, sudden change of temperature in the environment, water damage, etc. may also be causing all sorts of hiccups in general daily use.

They require minimal effort to fix and can be handled easily by a professional.

Conclusion

While many of these repairs are doable individually, professional help can provide a cleaner, more efficient, safer, and overall, more cost-effective solution as repairs are insured and the personnel are properly trained for these jobs along with access to the best tools, High-quality original replacement parts, etc.
